The objectives of written translation are very different from those of interpretation.
Translation includes the elaboration and understanding of the original text in the “source language” and the subsequent production of a new text, which is the same as the original but in another language (the “target language”).
The term “translation” indicates not only the act of translating, but the translated text which results from it as well.
Translation is therefore the written transposition of concepts from one language into another, while in interpretation the message is conveyed orally as to keep it unchanged as far as possible, respecting the style of the original.
Due to differences between the two languages is difficult to mantain both the exact meaning and the style of the writing.
The translator is obliged to make choices which change according to the nature of the text itself and the objective of the translation. If, for example, in the case of juridical or technical translation the main emphasis must be on adherence to the original text, in literary translations the intent of the writer is more important than the literal translation.
In some cases the translator may use explanatory notes referring to specific cultures or geographical areas like puns or jokes.
